According to the 1887 List of Residents of Janova, Harris was drafted in the National Guard as a private during the 1882 draft. Judith Saul Stix estimates that he came to America with his father and brother about that time. Perhaps the draft was the impetus to leave Jonava. He lived with his father and brother on the Lower East Side of New York, and stayed in New York when they moved to Washington,DC. In 1890, Joseph Saul, a tailor was living with him in New York. This was probably his cousin, J Saul who moved to Hartwell, Georgia in 1893. The 1900 Census shows Harris and his wife Sarah living in New York with their three children and Austrian born servants. They had moved to more modern apartments uptown at 129 East 82nd. In 1904, they moved to Atlanta, following JJ and other family members. In 1919 he founded the first dress factory in the South, the Queen Quality Manufacturing Company. Later it became H. Saul a & Co. and still later it was called Saul Klenberg & Co. as Harris took in his son-in-law. He was a member of Ahavath Achim Congregation, B'nai Brith, and the Progressive Club.
